A car that is designed and shaped by science and named after a fax machine has reveled its open roof sibling yesterday and they labeled it as McLaren MP4-12C Spider at a price tag of £195,500 ($306,786 or Rs 1.66 crores), £19,500 more than the MP412C coupe.
McLaren MP4-12C Spider weighs 40 kgs more due to the retractable roof system. This slightly affects the overall performance of the car as topspeed has been reduced to 204 mph (329 kmph) from 207 mph (333 kmph). It’s mighty 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine generates a massive 616 hp and 600 Nm torque. It races from 0-62mph in just 3.1 and if you remember, it is same as its coupe sibling. Transmission is taken care by a 7 speed dual clutch with rocker mounted shift paddles behind the steering wheel.
The Spider also uses the carbon-fibre Monocell chassis from the coupé, which McLaren says required no extra strengthening. The car comes equipped with Brake Steer, ProActive Chassis Control and McLaren’s own Airbrake. The Spider also features a passive Roll Over Protection System to maximise safety in addition to the steel buttress that absorbs impact energy, which protects driver and passenger.
Information on the Spider is limited at the moment, but McLaren has promised to release more details very soon.
Do check out 12C Spider configurator website at www.configure.mclaren.com; it’s pretty cool. McLaren claims that there are millions of unique combinations for you to trick out your 12C Spider. And if you choose, order the model you’ve just customised.
